WHAT IT MEANS
What "Buy Silver by the Pound" Really Means
The big number at the top of this page, $933.04 as of September 24, 2026, is the spot price of silver converted to a pound. Spot is what one troy ounce of pure silver trades for right now on the wholesale market, for immediate delivery. Today that's $63.98 an ounce. Multiply it by 14.583, the number of troy ounces in an ordinary pound, and you get the per-pound figure. Every silver price you'll run into, from a dealer's bar listing to a buyer's offer on a box of old flatware, starts from that one number.
Four things about it clear up most of the confusion:
- Nobody sells at spot. Spot is a wholesale reference price. Retail dealers add a premium to cover minting, refining, shipping, insurance and their margin. When you buy a pound of silver, you pay spot plus that premium. When you sell, you usually get something under spot.
- Spot moves all day. Silver trades nearly around the clock, so the price changes from minute to minute on weekdays. We refresh this page every 6 hours and stamp the exact time of the figure, so you always know how fresh it is.
- The hero and the chart use two related sources. The hero shows spot (from gold-api.com). The chart plots COMEX silver futures, the exchange contract most dealers watch, because that's the source with a clean daily history. The two usually sit close together; today the futures price is $64.28, a gap of +$0.30 an ounce. We label both rather than blending them.
- A per-pound price is only as good as the purity. $933.04 is the value of a pound of pure silver. A pound of 90% coins or 92.5% sterling holds less silver, so it's worth less. The cards above show the difference.
Buying "by the pound" usually means one of two things. Sometimes it means a product whose weight is the point, such as a bag of old coins sold by weight, a jar of silver shot, or a bar poured to one pound. More often it's just a way of thinking about quantity: someone who plans to hold "ten pounds of silver" is really planning to hold about 146 troy ounces, in whatever form costs least per ounce. Either way, the math runs through the troy ounce.
THE POUND
The Pound Isn't the Pound You Think
This is the single most common mistake in silver listings, and it costs people money.
Silver, like gold, is weighed in troy ounces. A troy ounce is 31.103 grams, about 10% heavier than the everyday (avoirdupois) ounce of 28.35 grams you'd see on a bag of coffee. But when people say "a pound of silver," they almost always mean the everyday avoirdupois pound of 453.59 grams. That pound holds 14.583 troy ounces, not 16.
To make it more confusing, there's also a troy pound. It's 12 troy ounces (373.24 grams), and it went out of everyday use centuries ago, but it still turns up in old references and some online converters. A troy pound is about 18% lighter than a normal pound.
| You see | What it really holds |
|---|---|
| "1 lb silver" (avoirdupois) | 14.583 troy oz · 453.6 g |
| "1 troy lb" | 12.000 troy oz · 373.2 g |
| "16 oz silver bar" | 16 troy oz · 497.7 g, heavier than a pound |
| "16 oz" on a kitchen scale | 14.583 troy oz |
So a pound of pure silver is worth $933.04 today, not 16 × $63.98. If a listing prices a "pound" at sixteen times the ounce price, it's either mislabeled or overcharging. Our full guide to ounces in a pound has a conversion table for every unit you'll meet.
WHAT YOU CAN BUY
What You Can Buy by the Pound
These six forms are the ones most often sold or priced by weight. Each has its own guide with live values.
- Junk silver by the pound. Pre-1965 US dimes, quarters and half dollars are 90% silver. Every $1 of face value weighs about 25 grams, so a pound is about $18 face and 13.1 troy ounces of silver, worth $839.74 today.
- Silver coins by the pound. Lots of Morgan and Peace dollars, and mixed older coins, sold by weight. About 17 silver dollars make a pound.
- Silver shot and grain. Small beads of .999 silver sold by weight, used by jewelers for casting and by people who want silver in small, divisible amounts.
- 1 lb silver bars. Rarer than you'd expect. Most bars are made in troy ounces or kilos, so a true one-pound bar is a specialty size.
- Silver monster boxes. 500 one-ounce coins in a sealed mint box: 34.3 pounds of silver, worth $31,990 in melt today.
- Sterling silver by the pound. Flatware, trays and hollowware are usually bought and sold by weight, at 92.5% silver.
PREMIUMS
What a Pound Costs Once Premiums Are Added
The per-pound price above is melt value. What you'll pay depends mostly on the form, because premiums vary far more between products than most buyers expect. These are the typical ranges reported by bullion price trackers in 2026, per troy ounce over spot:
| Form | Typical premium over spot |
|---|---|
| 100 oz and kilo bars | about 1–4% |
| 10 oz bars | about 3–6% |
| Generic 1 oz bars and rounds | about 3–12% |
| Shot and grain | a few percent |
| 90% junk silver | at or near melt in calm markets |
| Sovereign coins (Maple Leaf, Britannia) | about 12–20% |
| American Silver Eagles | about 15–25% |
Two cautions. Premiums swing hard with demand: when buyers rush in, coins and junk silver can jump well above these ranges within days, because mints and refiners can't scale up quickly. And the cheapest single listing online is often a one-off deal below the typical range. A 10% premium on a pound of silver is the price of nearly one and a half troy ounces of metal, so the form you choose matters more than almost anything else. Paste any dealer's price into our premium-over-spot calculator to see exactly what you're paying per ounce and per pound.
BUYING
How to Buy Silver by the Pound in 4 Steps
- Decide how many pounds, then convert to ounces. Ten pounds is 145.8 troy ounces, worth $9,330 at melt today. Dealers price in ounces, so do your comparing in ounces too.
- Pick the form with the premium you can live with. Large bars cost least per ounce, junk silver is the most divisible, and coins are the easiest to sell but cost the most.
- Get the all-in price in writing. That means premium, shipping, insurance and payment-method surcharge. Run it through the premium calculator.
- Plan storage before it arrives. Ten pounds of silver is about the size of a paperback, but fifty pounds needs a bolted-down safe or a depository. Our buying guide covers the options, including silver IRAs.
FAQ
Silver by the Pound FAQ
How much is a pound of silver worth today?
A pound of pure silver is worth $933.04 at today's spot price, as of September 24, 2026. That's 14.583 troy ounces at $63.98 each. Retail prices run higher because of dealer premiums.
How many ounces of silver are in a pound?
14.583 troy ounces. Silver is weighed in troy ounces, which are heavier than everyday ounces, so a normal 16-ounce pound holds only 14.583 of them.
Is it cheaper to buy silver by the pound?
Not automatically. What makes silver cheap per ounce is the form, not the unit. Large bars and junk silver in calm markets carry the lowest premiums; coins carry the highest.
Can I buy silver at the spot price?
Rarely. Spot is a wholesale price. Occasional promotions or secondary-market bars come close, but expect to pay a premium on almost everything.
What's the cheapest form of silver per pound?
Usually 100 oz or kilo bars, at a few percent over spot. Junk silver can be close to melt when demand is quiet, but its premium rises fastest when buyers rush in.
