About Silver by the Pound
Prices on this page use silver spot at $63.98/troy oz ($933.04/lb) · updated
Silver by the Pound is an independent reference site about buying, pricing and weighing silver in the unit most people actually use: the pound. We publish the silver price per pound, a price history in dollars per pound, guides to the products that are sold by weight, and free calculators for melt value, dealer premiums and scrap lots.
We aren't a dealer. We don't sell silver, buy silver, store anyone's metal or take orders. That's deliberate. A site that isn't trying to sell you silver can be straightforward about premiums, about what buyers really pay, and about which products suit which buyers.
Where Our Prices Come From
Every price on this site traces back to one of two named sources.
Spot price: gold-api.com. The headline price per pound and per troy ounce, and every figure derived from it (pound values by purity, bar and coin melt values, calculator results), comes from gold-api.com's spot quote for silver (XAG) in US dollars. Spot is the wholesale price of one troy ounce of pure silver for immediate delivery. We convert it to a pound by multiplying by 14.5833, the number of troy ounces in an avoirdupois pound. That conversion is exact.
Chart and history: COMEX silver futures via Yahoo Finance. Our charts, the year-by-year history table and the all-time-high figures come from daily prices for COMEX silver futures (ticker SI=F), retrieved from Yahoo Finance's public chart data and converted to dollars per pound. Futures give a clean daily record back to 2000, which spot feeds generally don't.
Because the two sources measure slightly different things, they rarely match to the cent. We label each number with its source instead of blending them.
What we don't do: we don't embed third-party price widgets, and we never estimate or interpolate a price. If a day's data is missing, that day is left out of the chart rather than filled in.
How Often Prices Refresh
Every 6 hours, for everyone. An automated job fetches fresh data from both sources, rebuilds every page with the new numbers, runs our checks, and publishes the result. That rebuilt price is what search engines read and what you see with JavaScript turned off. Charts, history tables and record figures only change at these rebuilds, because they're built from daily prices.
More often while a page is open. On pages that show a live price, your browser may re-check the spot price periodically while the tab is open and update the headline figures and calculators to match. Nothing is sent to us when it does.
Timestamps mean the data's time. The time beside each price is when that price was published by the source, not when you loaded the page.
Stale beats blank. If a source is down, or returns something that fails our checks, we keep showing the last good data with its original timestamp. You won't see an empty chart or an invented number; you might occasionally see an older timestamp than you expect.
Weekends. Silver markets largely close from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening, US time, so weekend pages show Friday's closing figures with Friday's timestamp.
Not a trading feed. Prices move between refreshes. Use ours to judge whether a dealer's or buyer's quote is reasonable, and get the live transaction price from them.
Editorial Standards
Sourced and dated facts. Coin weights and purities come from mint specifications, numismatic references and the statutes that set them. Premium ranges and seller payout ranges come from published 2026 industry sources, and we present them as typical ranges, not quotes. Facts about companies come from their own published terms and from public records such as the Better Business Bureau, with the date we checked.
Math you can repeat. Every value here is arithmetic on the spot price: weight × purity × price. We show the formulas and worked examples on every calculator and guide.
Units stated every time. A "pound" on this site always means the everyday avoirdupois pound (453.59 grams), and an "ounce" of silver always means a troy ounce unless we say otherwise. When a listing or buyer might mean something else, we point it out.
No invented people or ratings. Our pages are written and reviewed by our editorial team. We don't use fictional author personas, star ratings, testimonials or "editor's pick" badges.
No forecasts, no advice. We explain how silver is priced and sold. We don't predict prices, and we don't tell anyone what to buy, sell or hold. Nothing here is personalized financial, tax or legal advice.
How Corrections Work
We don't run a contact inbox. Instead, accuracy is built into how the site is maintained:
- Prices correct themselves. Every price is regenerated from its source at each 6-hourly rebuild, so a wrong figure can't outlive the next refresh.
- Checks run before anything publishes. Each rebuild verifies that every price on every page matches the source data and the conversion math, and that no page is missing its timestamp. If a check fails, the rebuild doesn't publish and the previous version stays up.
- Facts are re-verified on a schedule. Product specifications, premium ranges and company facts are rechecked against their named sources, and significant changes are noted in the update history on the affected page.
How We Make Money (Full Disclosure)
The site is free, with no sign-ups or subscriptions. It's funded by one affiliate relationship.
Augusta Precious Metals. Some pages include links to Augusta Precious Metals, which sells gold and silver for IRAs and for cash purchases. If you click one of those links and become an Augusta customer, we may earn a commission. It costs you nothing extra and doesn't change the price you pay.
How we handle it:
- Every affiliate link is labeled as sponsored, marked
rel="sponsored"for search engines, and accompanied by a disclosure wherever it appears, including inside the pop-up some visitors see. - Seller pages carry no affiliate button. Our sterling, scrap and pound calculator pages are mostly used by people selling silver, so they carry neutral seller guidance instead.
- We say who Augusta isn't for. Its $50,000 minimum is about 53.6 pounds of silver at today's spot, so it doesn't suit small purchases. Our buying guide says so plainly and explains how to compare retail dealers instead.
- We tell readers to check every quote, including Augusta's. Our premium calculator exists so anyone can see exactly what they're paying over spot, whoever they buy from.
- Payment doesn't buy coverage. Augusta doesn't review or approve our content, and our prices, calculators and guides would read the same without the relationship.
We don't accept payment for rankings, reviews or placement, and we don't sell advertising.
